With clear call-outs to 1960s and 1970s folk music (in particular Joni Mitchell’s legendary “Blue”), Aimee Mann’s latest is one of her most touching, consistent albums in a while, allowing the distinctive performer’s remarkable lyrics to take center stage, without forgetting to ensure the music itself is robust and sonically magnetizing. Most remarkable however are Mann’s vocals, which here have taken on a maturity and clarity that ironically make her sound refreshed and rejuvenated, taking the listener on a remarkable and rewarding experience that can be enjoyed again and again.
