It’s a shame that the marketing for this visually arresting horror film focused on the freakshow aspect of its storyline, as it suggests an empty, gross-out shlock flick when in fact, this is a truly remarkable, well-acted and uniquely directed horror experience. Blending a sort of trailer-park “Rosemary’s Baby” aesthetic by way of David Cronenberg’s body horror and David Lynch’s disturbing dissection of small town Americana, “Antibirth” crafts a surprisingly compelling story of desperate, dead-end lives and the various forces that prey upon them, leading to a genuinely shocking climax played to perfection by a trio of terrific leading performances by Natasha Lyonne, Chloe Sevigny and the always-fascinating Meg Tilly.
