Aliens (1986)

Easily one of the best genre movies ever made, James Cameron’s “Aliens” is the rare sequel that manages to expand all the elements that made the original film so special and build a mythology around them that feels both organic and necessary. Cameron crafts a masterpiece that combines likable characters, crowd-pleasing one-liners and an impressive array of special effects, along with top-notch visual and audio work, and delivers an exciting, genre-switching sequel that matches the original in its intensity. Sigourney Weaver’s performance is commanding and powerful, and she’s well-matched by an charismatic assembly of character actors guided to perfection along with Cameron’s deft touch with dynamified dialogue. Not to be missed by genre fans, although it’s hard to imagine there are many left who haven’t seen it at least once.
