The Weeknd – Starboy (2016)

From the opening title track, it’s clear we’re in for an interesting, lush ride with The Weeknd’s second studio album. Across the album’s eighteen tracks and with the help of various collaborators (most notably Daft Punk and Kendrick Lamar), The Weeknd stretches his sound and vocals further than before and occasionally enters retro-dance territory on songs like “A Lonely Night” and “Secrets,” while other numbers instead register as deeply mournful and surprisingly touching, like “Six Feet Under” and “I Feel It Coming.” Although some of his lyrics continue to be off-putting, he sings with more confidence here than before, and has crafted a truly entertaining mainstream record that can be revisited often.
