Janet Jackson – Unbreakable (2015)

After a seven-year hiatus, Janet Jackson’s return to the spotlight is a bit of a letdown. Mind you, the music is fine and so is the production (if a bit messy and overlong, as with most of Jackson’s albums since 1993’s “Janet”), but after such a long silence, it’s a disappointment that the best thing I can say about this album is that it’s “fine.” Songs like “BURNITUP!” and “The Great Forever” have great hooks, while “Dammm Baby,” “No Sleeep” and “After You Fall” are solid earworms to revisit often. But across fifteen tracks (plus two remixes), there are no stand-out tracks, and Jackson’s vocals are no better or worse than before. It’s just more of the same ol’ same ol’ on this Janet album, and that’s such a letdown from an artist who was known for pushing boundaries but seems to have been on autopilot since 2001’s “All for You.”
