This is the original version of “The Exorcist 4” directed by Paul Schrader – who was replaced by Renny Harlin and the film re-cast and re-shot as “Exorcist: The Beginning” – retaining only lead Stellan Skarsgaard. While the Harlin version was a boring, plodding mess, this one is more cohesive and atmospheric, yet still not particularly good. Skarsgaard is better here, more sympathetic and likable than in the Harlin version, and the movie has its share of creepy, effective moments. But the climax is such a disaster and the replacement special effects so cheap that it’s impossible to reflect well on the finished product, although I would pick this version over the Harlin one as the cannonical version.
