Much like his latest comedy special “2017,” “Live at the Comedy Store” finds the comic struggling to move away from his “Everyman” persona. While much of the material here is less about the trials and tribulations of modern life than his previous work, CK’s new direction is less focused, veering from topic to topic at whiplash speed but without his trademark delivery, which seems a bit diluted by an overall lack of energy. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s that it seems clear CK is struggling to keep his material and performances fresh, and seems to be trying out new stuff as he goes along. The result is uneven, and seems all the worse paired with Jay London’s rambling, confused opening act here.
