Family Guy (Season 6) (2007)

Maybe it’s around here that “Family Guy” began its precipitous slip from hilarious to aggressively insulting in earnest. The two former seasons had introduced a smugness that hadn’t been present before but it’s not until Season 6 that the occasional mean-spiritedness the show had demonstrated here and there began to take hold and rear its ugly head more often not. Perhaps it’s a symptom of the discourse of pop culture at the time, which, with the rise of Perez Hilton, TMZ, etc, had veered into a corosive and toxic sludge and encouraged needless verbal cruelty – but whatever it was, “Family Guy” Season 6 is occasionally hilarious but seems more interested in blunt insults than funny jokes, and while it doesn’t outright ruin the show, it does take some of the fun out of it.
