Although it’s entirely conventional, there’s something alternately both corny and strangely compelling about this strange little drama. Other than featuring Winona Ryder’s first leading performance, it’s also notable for an out-of-left-field, halfway-convincing performance by Rob Lowe as a mentally challenged young man that often borders on embarrassing, Golden Globe nomination notwithstanding. Nevertheless, the setting is unique and the atmosphere is pure Texas – from the chicken-fried steaks to the embedded cigarette smoke – and Jane Alexander, as Ryder’s wayward mother, is terrific in an uncharacteristically flamboyant role.

I haven’t seen this one! Winona and Jane Alexander together in a movie? Thanks for the link. 🙂

Haha glad to help! Let me know what you think of Jane Alexander’s performance, she’s at her most Meryl Streepian here.

I believe Alexander is one of USA’s best actors. Have you seen Testament (1983)? Alexander was absolutely brilliant! It’s too bad that she’s semi-retired.

No I haven’t seen Testament but I’ll definitely hunt it out, I think she’s incredible as well. I never would have thought this actress here is the same as the one in “Kramer vs Kramer” and “All the President’s Men,” she’s quite versatile.
