Fans of “Shaun of the Dead” or Peter Jackson’s “Dead-Alive” should track down this horror-comedy hybrid as soon as possible. Although it obviously has a smaller budget and scope than the aforementioned movies, it shares their glee at the destruction of the human body in the name of both horror and comedy, and moves at a breakneck speed. The horror scenes work just fine, but really the comedy is the star here, thanks to terrific and funny writing that keeps the characters front and center, no matter how the carnage gets out of hand. Add in a likable cast (including Elijah Wood, Alison Pill and Jack McBrayer), and you’ve got a budding cult classic waiting to happen. It does seem to run out of steam a bit by the end, but getting there is a blast.
