Sun Kil Moon – Universal Themes (2015)

Knowing Sun Kil Moon only from his previous album “Benji,” I wasn’t quite sure what to expect here, but what I found was disappointing and, well, boring. I respect the aesthetics and the straightforward nature of the lyrics, but there’s something emotionless and flat in Moon’s voice that distracts me. The music is largely meandering and striking, but the finished product borders on self-parody. Given how long his career has been going there’s clearly an audience for Sun Kil Moon, but I think I can be counted out.
