It’s often clear throughout this fourth season of NBC’s reboot of the BBC sitcom that the producers were stretching the characters further and headed towards a more mainstream mode for the show. Much has become cartoonish and occasionally one-dimensional, not to mention many 45-minute episodes that feel padded and rhythmically off somehow, but the show is so well-acted and the writing is so strong that you can’t help but go along for the ride. Steve Carell’s Michael is, of course, still the best thing about the show, while Pam and Jim have gradually become rather grating.
