Bruno Mars – Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010)

The debut album by the charming, entertaining performer is exactly how it was marketed: It’s a fun, crisp and fast-paced valentine to pop and old-school funk, fronted by a gifted vocalist with a silky voice who oozes good cheer and positivity from the first moments of the album. Songs like “Grenade” and “Just the Way You Are” helped propel Mars himself to international stardom, and album tracks like the silky, sexy “Our First Time” help underline how effective and cohesive the finished product ultimately is. Mars makes it seem effortless here, and that alone is a strength that not many debut albums have, thanks its name-sake’s multitudinous ease with various musical styles and a knack for a catchy hook.
