Easily one of the worst of the many horror remakes to be released in the twenty-first century, director Adam Gierasch’s update of the underrated 1988 gem has the benefit of tremendous inspiration from the original and yet somehow manages to land flat on its face from beginning to end. The limited budget is not only apparent but flat-out distracting, the lighting is amateurish and the acting is barely existent: Leads Monica Keena, Shannon Elizabeth and Edward Furlong are each terrible in different ways, but it’s Furlong who takes the cake thanks to a disheveled shrug of a performance. But what really makes the finish product indefensible is its ugly, juvenile treatment of women, mistaking vulgarity for edginess and spawning an off-putting atmosphere that never lets up.
