Mermaids (1990)

Cher’s return to the big screen following her Best Actress Oscar for “Moonstruck” is the perfect choice for the multi-talented grand dame of pop: Her central role is tailor-made for her charm, talent and screen presence, and she shares warm chemistry with supporting players Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder and a young Christina Ricci (in her film debut). The sparks between Cher and Ryder are particularly striking as the two distinctive performers bring out the best in each other as a dueling mother and daughter set, while Hoskins brings his considerable amiability to his turn as Cher’s love interest. This is a fan favorite for many fans of the film’s stars, and it’s not hard to see why, with its rich 1960s setting, great use of music and remarkably adept editing.
