Marina and the Diamonds – Electra Heart (2012)

The second album from the fierce pop songstress reinforces all the right moves from her debut album (2010’s “The Family Jewels”): Primarily her playful, inventive and clever lyrics. What makes this one work even better however, is that she embraces mainstream pop before subverting it, but without ever judging it or acting as though she’s above it. The pop songs are immediate and accessible, and one could almost miss the insightful lyrics but they’re definitely there, in everything from the dancefloor-ready thumper “Homewrecker” to the mournful “Lies” and “Starring Role.” Not to be missed by fans of Robyn, Dragonette, or La Roux.
