Atypical (Season 1) (2017)

Featuring tremendous co-lead performances by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Keir Gilchrist, Netflix’s comedy-drama series about an 18-year-old young man (Gilchrist) with autism discovering a desire for romantic companionship and its impact on his immediate family lives up to its title. Its exploration of autism is perhaps simplified in order to fit a serio-comic television show’s narrative, but the show manages to underline Gilchrist’s struggles with aspects of daily life without succumbing to quirkiness nor making his peculiarities the subject of punchlines at any point. It’s the kind of show not unlike “Shameless” that tackles a difficult subject matter with a clear perspective.
