South Park (Season 1) (1997)

The inaugural season of Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s resilient, confrontational animated sitcom is showing its age, but even the passage of time hasn’t softened its edges. It’s an aggressive, go-for-broke evisceration of modern American society that’s occasionally unpleasant and mean-spirited, but there’s enough electrifying energy to keep things interesting. Episodes like “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe” and “Damien” highlight the show’s irreverent, overtly silly components but it’s episodes like “Death” and “Tom’s Rhinoplasty” that can still rattle even seasoned shock-comedy fans.
