Kathleen – Kathleen (1991)

My experience with this debut album by the 1990s Quebecois popstar is likely enhanced by nostalgia. Listening to it for the first time since I was a child, I greatly experienced the walk down memory lane, but I’m not sure I’d recommend the album to an English-speaking audience or people looking to explore new musical experiences. The music is occasionally thin and the lyrics can be clumsy, but nevertheless there are enough strong pop hooks to keep things moving nicely and Kathleen herself has a strong voice that is well-suited to the music. Tracks like “Hola” and, especially, “Ou Aller” were great fun to rediscover after all these years.
