Initially overlooked upon original release, this late-1990s horror entry is a sort of mix between “The Poseidon Adventure” and a monster movie, and is nothing short of gloriously entertaining. Directed by Stephen Sommers, who would follow it with 1999’s winning “The Mummy,” the movie has the same elements that made “The Mummy” such an audience hit: Likable characters, tense set pieces, and a charming sense of humor that keeps things moving quickly. It’s surely a little too long and takes a while to get things going, but when it works, it really works.
