The Ritual (2017)

“The Ritual” is what happens if you put “The Descent,” “The Witch” and “Blair Witch” in a blender, and I mean that as a good thing. It’s not to suggest that “The Ritual” doesn’t have its own original ideas, as the movie is filled with them and remains unpredictable from beginning to end, but it seems to have found inspiration from the aforementioned movies. The cast is likable and the pace is surprisingly quick and languid, while the horror scenes are legitimately terrifying, on the way to an unpredictable, unsettling climax. It’s hard to discuss what makes this movie work without revealing any of its secrets, but suffice it to say that “The Ritual” will likely find its audience and earn cult status over time as an effective, unsettling genre entry worthy of repeat viewings.
