Another strong routine from the controversial performer, albeit weaker than her previous arsenal. Perhaps it’s that, at this point, Kathy Griffin had become much more mainstream than she’d ever been before and as a result, was more cautious about insider stories she could share with the audience. Mind you it’s not to suggest that there’s no backstage dirt here, it’s just that it’s relatively weak, and reveals some of her vulnerabilities as a comedian – namely, her primary strength is her tart-tongued, “winner take all” attitude towards Hollywood gossip from a relative outsider’s perspective. Here, the audience is treated to some soft backstage dirt about the Grammy and Emmy awards, but there isn’t much there, while nearly half the routine consists of her recounting a birthday celebration with Cher (although, it’s admittedly charming and endearing, if not exactly all that funny). In some ways, this special revealed that, while the empress does indeed have clothes, they might be a little flimsier than her fans originally thought.
