Portlandia (Season 5) (2015)

Maybe it’s that IFC’s sketch comedy show has reached the limit of its potential, or maybe it’s that co-creators Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen haven’t tweaked the formula enough as the show has gone on, but something about Season 5 doesn’t quite work all the way. In concept most of the sketch ideas are effective, like the ones in “The Story of Toni & Candace” or “Doug Becomes a Feminist” for example, but the execution seems rather perfunctory. A shift in tone might help the show grow and remain fresh, but as it is, “Portlandia” seems to be on autopilot.

Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)
