Table 19 (2017)

This little comedy-drama feels like it could have been made in the 1990s and co-starred Parker Posey. Its got a minimalist setting and structure, meandering from one comedically strained interaction to another that recall some of Richard Linklater’s most famous comedies like “Dazed and Confused” and “SubUrbia.” Thankfully, director Jeffrey Blitz is blessed with a tremendously talented cast that includes Anna Kendrick, Wyatt Russell and the always-excellent Lisa Kudrow (among others) – Kendrick, in particular, occupies her character with complete sincerity, and adeptly shows off her versatility and onscreen charm. This isn’t the type of comedy that everyone will appreciate, but fans of the aforementioned Linklater movies and director Joe Swanberg’s semi-improvised comedies will find plenty to enjoy here.
