Sausage Party (2016)

Given the participation of many onscreen stoners, it’s not particularly difficult to make the stretch and a suggest that this movie was conceived while its creators were baked out of their minds. That would explain the one-joke premise the movie is based on, although it doesn’t take away from the fact that there are plenty of genuinely amusing, if not outright hilarious, moments peppered throughout. From beginning to end it’s defiantly juvenile and offensive to the point where there are few social groups or religious associations left unscathed, but there’s enough good will for the audience to just sit back, relax and go with it. Seth Rogen’s vocal performance has the same manic energy he brings to his live-action appearances, while Kristen Wiig matches him beat for beat every chance she gets. There’s a limited audience for this and I suspect a hazy cloud is necessary to entirely give in to the movie, but as it is, it definitely has its moments.

Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)
