Ricky Gervais: Humanity (2018)

If Ricky Gervais set out to prove that he’s become an obnoxious, thin-skinned, dismissive jerk, then he succeeded well with this Netflix special. His first recorded tour in seven years, it starts off well but the routine quickly becomes insolent and off-putting, as Gervais positions himself as an arbitrator of free speech and spends the rest of the running time patting himself on the pack. An extended diatribe about Caitlyn Jenner is frustrating not so much for its childish and taunting nature but instead because it’s mean-spirited and tiresome. Ultimately, Gervais relishes the opportunity to test the boundaries of free speech but forgets to include many laughs, and the finished product is a juvenile bummer.
