Mom and Dad (2017)

Arriving fully charged thanks to a demented concept and the enthusiastic participation of co-leads Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair, this intense horror-comedy recalls some of the self-aware heights of 2014’s “Cooties” and 2013’s “Discopathe.” It’s got a cool 1970s grindhouse atmosphere enhanced by a deliberately gritty, rough-around-the-edges reel presentation and a neat use of music to establish and maintain mood. But really this is all about Cage and Blair chewing up the screen, and while they have no chemistry as a married couple they nevertheless manage to sink their teeth into every inch of the screen they respectively occupy. The movie runs out of steam by the last twenty minutes or so, but getting there is a blast for folks with dark sensibilities and a gallows sense of humor to match.

Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)
