I can’t quite figure out this romantic drama. Mind you, it’s not that the movie is difficult to understand or follow, as it’s fairly simple and straightforward. What confuses me is why anybody decided that its story was one worth telling: There isn’t much to it, it often plays like a subpar made-for-television romance, while Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater have little onscreen chemistry. Tomei tries her best to rise above the material but there just isn’t much going on, while Slater is pretty much an inscrutable blank from beginning to end while his performance is negligible. Rosie Perez is a live wire here as she always is but even she’s not enough to bring some energy to the proceedings.
