This third sequel (well, prequel, anyways) to the underrated 1990 gem is a bit of a conundrum. On the one hand, it’s perfectly pleasant, making efforts to connect to the original movie in an organic manner and expanding the mythology of the series. However, there’s nothing special about it: It tries hard to make Michael Gross a compelling leading man (as the previous entry did) with limited success, the special effects are serviceable but unremarkable, and the whole thing plays out pretty casually. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it per se, it’s just pretty bland and forgettable, and never convinces the audience that its story is one worth telling.
