This is probably the best season of this remarkably entertaining show so far. With the dynamics already wonderfully established in the previous seasons, the show is left to explore the relationships among the characters freely and the result is surprisingly effective at keeping things fresh. In particular, the relationship between Eric and Donna becomes the late-season primary focus and the show masterfully explores gender dynamics of its era, on the way to an inevitable, rather bold season finale that redefines the show as it goes. Along many of its standout episodes, the Halloween episode (“Too Old to Trick or Treat, Too Young to Die”) is likely a series best, a charmingly well-acted and well-structured homage to Alfred Hitchcock that hits all the right notes.
