There are no two ways about it: Netflix’s “The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale” is a repackaged “The Soup.” That’s fine by me because I loved “The Soup,” which McHale hosted for twelve seasons and manages to slip right back into his old role, primarily discussing reality TV lowlights with the same sort of glee he did before. Here, the show also benefits from regular appearances from a variety of performers like Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant and Eric Bana (among many others), and the small set makes the overall experience feel intimate. It’s not for everybody but those who enjoy absurd non-sequitur humor will love it. An additional six episodes (released at once a few months after the show’s premiere) are just as good as those that came first.
