Game Night (2018)

A delightful surprise, this mainstream studio comedy often plays like a no-holds-barred independent movie that happens to have a recognizable cast and strong production values. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are well-paired as a married couple whose regular game night evening goes awry with a series of increasingly perilous developments, with the two sharing a significant amount of chemistry. The supporting cast is also tremendous, with a standout Jesse Plemmons stealing scenes left and right, not to mention unlikely duo Billy Magnussen and Sharon Horgan, whose rapport is never anything less than hilarious and endearing. This is the type of Hollywood comedy that embraces its R rating and goes for broke, and the finished movie is a great time from beginning to end.

Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)
