Bad Grandpa (2003)

My exposure to the Jackass universe has been limited to an attempt to watch the first movie, which was aborted after I started vomiting halfway through (true story). I decided to give this a shot because I was in the market for something silly and outrageous, and that’s exactly what “Bad Grandpa” is. It’s remarkable to watch Johnny Knoxville in his element, under makeup as a foul-mouthed, vulgar octogenarian, what with his dedication to his character and his impressively fearless approach to confrontational comedy. Co-star Jackson Nicoll is perfectly cast as well, able to extract surprisingly layered comedy from simple concepts despite his young age. It’s a defiantly juvenile comedy that has very little to say about, well, anything, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want to watch.
