More of a remake than a sequel, “Deep Blue Sea 2” is perplexing in its pointlessness. The story is almost the same as the first despite a few adjustments and additions here and there, minus the solid special effects, ominous atmosphere, good acting, and interesting characters. The ostensible leads here are all unlikable (in particular Danielle Savre), and there’s no reason to root for any of these characters, while none of the sharks register any menace or real presence. It’s the type of sequel-cum-remake that has no reason to exist except as a crass cash grab, but it does serve as a great reminder of how entertaining and well-done the original is.
