Faerie Tale Theatre: “Jack and the Beanstalk” (1983)

One of the more straightforward of the “Faerie Tale Theatre” episodes so far, “Jack and the Beanstalk” is blessed with a snappy pace, solid comedic acting and a number of genuinely funny moments. Myself, I was unfamiliar with the its source fairy tale and I found it enchanting, what with its clever structure, its light sociopolitical undertones and its imaginative goings-on. In addition, the episode itself is blessed with superb acting all around, from lead Dennis Christopher to an entertaining Jean Stapleton to an unrecognizable Ellitot Gould. Like most “Faerie Tale Theatre” episodes thus far it’s a tad too long but it sure is a charming addition to the show.

Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)
