Kung Fury (2015)

This thirty-minute short has more inspiration, passion and effective comedic writing than the majority of full-length movies. It’s nearly impossible to describe: It’s somewhere between an ode to 1980s action movies and television, console and arcade games, and a Saturday morning cartoon come to life all at once. In some ways it would probably make a great companion piece with 2013’s “Rewind This,” a documentary about VHS culture that reflects much of the nostalgic delights that this movie is made up of. Lead David Samberg is downright hilarious in an effective deadpan performance, and he’s surrounded by top-notch performers, writers and graphic artists, who collectively fill each frame with their obvious dedication to this peculiar little project.
