The Car (1977)

It’s hard to believe that a movie about a possessed car mowing down innocent townfolk could be so damn boring, but “The Car” is here to prove it’s possible. There isn’t much happening at any point really, with a series of shoddy, repetitive car attack scenes done on the cheap substituting for suspense. Lead James Brolin makes for a strong onscreen presence here and brings a certain level of authority with him to his role, but he doesn’t have much to do beyond brood and squint, while Kathleen Lloyd (of “It Lives Again”) manages to rise above her underwritten role. The movie’s use of spousal abuse as a plot point is tasteless, but at least it approaches the subject matter thoughtfully.
