Kelis – Flesh Tone (2010)

Even at just under forty minutes, this exciting EP by the enigmatic performer has more terrific dance songs than most mainstream pop records. Lead single “Acapella” sets the tone fairly well: It’s an inventive, unique yet accessible dance floor anthem that diverts away from the more typical subjects for this genre (like party themes or narratives about broken hearts) and instead focuses on hope, positivity and renewed energy following parenthood. Other tracks like “4th of July (Fireworks”) and “Home” demonstrate just how well-structured each song is, and the finished product is one of 2010’s finest albums.
