Strike a Pose (2016)

A documentary about the lives of Madonna’s former dancers doesn’t sound particularly compelling, but “Strike a Pose” is one of the most touching, compelling documentaries I’ve seen in a long time. Catching up with six former dancers from Madonna’s 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and its companion documentary “Madonna: Truth or Dare,” the movie reveals just how powerful an impact the on-screen participation of the mostly-gay dancers had on their own lives as well as a mainstream audience that had seldom been exposed to unfiltered gay men being portrayed as three-dimensional people. It’s filled with many unusually poignant moments and the participants are charming and articulate in different ways, so ultimately the movie makes a strong argument for itself as a companion piece to “Madonna: Truth or Dare” itself.
