Following on the heels of a surprisingly emotionally compelling last season, Season 5 of this winning, charming and consistent sitcom manages to continue its exploration of fraught social tensions in direct ways. With all the characters graduating from high school, the show’s tone has a certain urgency to it, as the well-established dynamics among the characters are each threatened in different ways, up to and including Kitty and Red. While the show puts its characters through a variety of wringers throughout the season, it never forgets that it’s first and foremost a sitcom about teenagers so it puts the laughs first and keeps things simple and direct, but not without consequence. It’s a tricky balancing act to pull off but luckily the hilarious writing and charismatic cast are up for the challenge.
