Garbage – Version 2.0 (1998)

In many ways, “Version 2.0” is the perfect sophomore album. After the band’s rather unlikely rise to mainstream royalty with 1995’s self-titled debut, they returned here with a similar sound but one that’s thrillingly expanded upon. For instance, “Wicked Ways” sounds like “Queer” in some ways, but the organization and execution are more sophisticated and technically proficient. It erodes some of the grungy, garage-band sound from the original album but it does nevertheless highlight the band’s musical and professional growth, and the album is littered with a variety of strong tracks like “Temptation Waits,” “I Think I’m Paranoid” and “Push It.”
