Another strong, effective episode of Shelley Duvall’s beloved family show, this adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale is the closest the show has ever gotten to horror, and it’s riveting to watch. Many previous episodes (like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Hansel and Gretel”) have flirted with horror iconography but here it’s overt and gleeful. The sets and special effects are charmingly ornate while the sound effects are used to constantly remind the audience of the potential for various supernatural happenstances. Peter MacNicol is perfectly cast in the title role and he shares many funny, charming moments with genre superstar Christopher Lee.
