Perhaps making this the final season of IFC’s unique sketch comedy show was the right move. It’s hard not to notice that leads Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen seem rather distracted and disinterested throughout, and a lot of the writing feels forced and strained. It’s nice to see the show wrap up a lot of its own season-long threads and there’s a nice shift in tone in the final few episodes here that connect the show back to some of its most famous characters and sketches in an inventive and passively cathartic manner. “Open Relationship” and the finale, “Rose Route,” have plenty of standout moments for regular guest performer Kyle McLachlan (with some help from Portland’s former mayor, Sam Adams), but the entire season is underwhelming and sedate.
