Faerie Tale Theatre: “The Snow Queen” (1985)

After a string of superior episodes like “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers,” this version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” is a bit of a letdown. The set design and costumes are strong but don’t quite rise to the original fairy tale’s potential, and central performers Melissa Gilbert and Lance Kerwin have little chemistry and a tendency to grate on the nerves. Nevertheless, Lee Remick and Lauren Hutton are well-cast as the Snow Queen and the Lady of Summer respectively, even if it’s a shame to see them wasted in service of two inadequate leads.
