Arcade Fire – Neon Bible (2007)

I’ll admit, I don’t quite see what all the fuss is about with Arcade Fire’s follow-up to their breakthrough debut “Funeral.” The music sounds similar to that of its predecessor but there’s something missing this time around: The vocals are drowned out by the messy, chaotic production, which has the unintended effect of dulling the impact of the strong lyrics, often lost to the cacophonous, overbearing music. That’s a shame, because there are terrific tracks like “Intervention,” “Black Wave-Bad Vibrations” and, especially, “Ocean of Noise” that remind the listener of Arcade Fire’s usually potent, compelling music and arrangements, but the unfortunate production saps the finished product of its inspiration.
