Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Almost as good as the previous entry, this sixth sequel to the 1980 classic has more to offer than one might expect. Originally developed as “Freddy vs Jason,” the movie adds telekinesis to the franchise’s growing supernatural repertoire in the form of final girl Tina, whose powers are deployed to great effect to finally give Jason an adversary who’s as powerful as he is. It all leads to a deliriously fun showdown between the two, and while the series’ signature kills are watered down (evidently due to pressure from the MPAA, who clamped down on slasher movies in the late ’80s), director John Carl Buechler does a solid job establishing effectively moody atmosphere and a brisk pace, so the whole thing goes down easy.

Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)
