Even though it’s set way late into Shudder’s 24-hour horror marathon with Joe Bob Briggs, Lamberto Bava’s “Demons” proves to be one of the highlights of the entire broadcast. Mind you, Briggs himself seems less than impressed with the movie even though he initially praises it, but I suspect that tiredness has more to do with it than genuine dislike. As for the movie, it’s one of my personal horror favorites: It’s not a great movie by any means, but it sure is memorable and has a number of downright terrifying scenes. The mood established by Bava is inimitable, and the setting is so perfectly suited to the movie’s narrative that it feels like a gift for horror fans. So, while the Briggs interludes are passable here (although he does give a thorough run-down of the history of the many sequels that follow, and it’s downright fascinating), the movie itself still manages to land.
