Demons 2 (1986)

In terms of structure and plot, “Demons 2” has plenty in common with its predecessor – namely, that there are barely any. Really, the movie works at breakneck speed to show off its makeup and special effects, establishing an eerie atmosphere along the way, and barely bothers with things like ‘characterization’ and ‘narrative.’ It works in the first movie but seems to fall flat a bit flat here: The creature effects are mostly solid but there are number of “Ghoulies”-level practical effects that are downright embarrassing, and the dialogue and voice dubbing are distractingly bad. There’s a certain grindhouse charm to the proceedings, most of it derived from goodwill left over from the first movie, and even though it’s a bit shoddy and laughable it’s still worth a watch for the atmosphere alone.

Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)
