Destination Wedding (2018)

This caustic romantic comedy is the type of incisive, hyper-verbose micro-narrative that works only because of the casting. Then again, the casting here seems to be the impetus for the entire project: Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves have worked a number of times before, and their chemistry feels both lived-in and electrifying, and it’s clear this project was designed with both actors in mind. Riffing off both their public personas and extracting a great deal of seemingly semi-improvisational comedic exchanges between the two that will keep the audience laughing as well as emotionally engaged. The narrative is far more meaningful that its visual presentation, which is intentionally stark and theatrical, and it’s up to the audience to engage on an intellectual level to figure out the characters. It’s a great example of stunt casting done right, and gives both performers plenty of room to show off their respective comedic skills.
