This caustic romantic comedy is the type of incisive, hyper-verbose micro-narrative that works only because of the casting. Then again, the casting here seems to be the impetus for the entire project: Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves have worked a number of times before, and their chemistry feels both lived-in and electrifying, and it’s clear this project was designed with both actors in mind. The narrative is far more meaningful than its visual presentation, which is intentionally stark and theatrical, and it’s up to the audience to engage with the movie on an intellectual level to figure out the characters. It’s a great example of stunt casting done right, and gives both performers plenty of room to show off their respective comedic skills.
