Leigh Whannell’s sci-fi/action hybrid carries the kind of momentum that announces a cult classic just waiting to happen. It’s in nearly every aspect of this movie’s DNA: From the opening credits, there’s a clear attempt to make a unique, distinctive movie, and Whannell lets the whole thing hit the ground running without bogging it down with unnecessary frills. Some of the dialogue is expository and rushed near the beginning, but once the movie gets going, you’re more than willing to take it on its own terms. Whannell’s enthusiasm for the genre is palpable in just about every shot, and it’s clear that this is a labor of love for the prolific filmmaker. It’s best to experience the movie with as little knowledge about its plot or themes as possible, and let the movie unfurl to the beat of its own urgent, furious drum.
